ing?

Muitos alunos ficam confusos ao verem uma frase como ‘Smoking is bad for the health’ ou ‘What a freezing cold day!’, porque traduzem todo e qualquer final –ING como gerúndio.

She is typing. (Ela está digitando)
They were playing football last night. (Eles estavam jogando futebol ontem à noite)
Julie will be studying for her test at this time tomorrow.

His mother is not happy with his excessive eating.
At University I learnt some principles in the art of building.

Swimming is a complete body workout.
Having a child requires a lot of responsabilities.

He preferes eating fruit to chocolate. (Ele prefere comer fruta do que chocolate).
Michael started speaking as soon as the meeting had finished. (O Michael começou a falar assim que a reunião havia acabado).

E também, após preposições:
I never go to bed before brushing my teeth.
Joan never leaves work without talking to me. (A Joan nunca sai do trabalho sem falar comigo).
They are not interested in leading the project.

It’s amazing how some people just do not worry about anything.
Lawyers have to work on being very convincing.
She greeted me with a warm welcoming hug.
My friend’s mobile ringtone is very annoying. (O toque do celular do meu amigo é muito irritante).

Hope it helps! :)
